Obituary of Ian McGill Black
Ian McGill Black passed away at home on January 31st, in his 76th year, following a brave fight with cancer.
Ian was born in Montreal on April 27, 1942 to parents Tom and Edna (Kerr) Black, the oldest of four children. He spent his early years between Kerr’s Farm in Lakefield, PQ and his family home in Oshawa, ON. At 18 he was employed by Northern Electric (Nortel) in Montreal and worked with the company until retirement. On June 14, 1974 he married Doreen Duncan. They spent several years living “back in the bush” in Lakefield before relocating to Dorchester, ON in 1981 where they raised four children. Ian was known for his many interests and hobbies. He was an aviation aficionado, avid reader, political enthusiast, amateur astronomer, green thumb gardener, and audiophile. He was always up for conversation, enjoyed reminiscing and was never without some news or a story to share. Ian will be forever remembered by his wife of 43 years, Doreen and his children Jeff, Erin (Scott), Alyson (Jeff), Scott (Danielle), brother Laird (Deborah) and sisters Sheila and Enid (Derek) as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and neighbours. He was a proud Grandpa to Wesley, Grant and Bryce McAllister; Lena, Nellie, Clara and Baby Wills and will be greatly missed by each of them. Thank you to Dr. Kuruvilla, Dr. Laba and staff at the Cancer Clinic for your compassion. We are so grateful for everyone involved in Ian’s home care, especially our wonderful nurse Raheal. A celebration of life will take place at the Optimist Club of North Dorchester on April 22nd from 1-4PM, followed by another gathering in Quebec this summer.
